Firemen

Hi everyone. Do me a favor... read your peers blogs so that I don't have to read a bunch of redundant information. React to what your classmates say. Try to interact with each other through this blog. Here we go...

1. Describe the role of firemen today; how are they generally received by the public?

2. How did 9/11 affect our perceptions of firemen?

3. How are firemen perceived by the public in Fahrenheit 451? (page 7) Why do you think this is?

  1. Blog 3: I believe that many people’s reactions to the firemen in Fahrenheit 451 are that they are frightened of the firemen. I believe this is because of the fact that if the public wants to do something different and read a book then the firemen will come and burn them and their houses. This is a very frightening thought and I think for the society it’s a choice they have to make. Do they either follow the rules and never do anything different or do they act like Clarisse and challenge the system and possibly die by the hands of firemen for their cause. Another feeling that I think they have toward the firemen is hatred. The reason for this feeling is that just because they are doing something different their house gets lit on fire and instead of being angry at the government they blame the firemen who are just doing their job.

  2. Blog 1: The role of modern fireman is to put out fires that could be hazardous rescue people from burning buildings and car accidents. firemen are usually received positively. This is due to the fact that they risk there life for others.

  3. Blog 2: I think that 9/11 was a real wake up call for a lot of people. For me 9/11 was the blast awake that made me grow up faster than I ever would have on my own and one way it did that was by making the fire fighters not the invincible saviors I once imagined them to be. When you're a little kid you always think that fire fighters always win, that they always save the day, but once 9/11 happened I realized that there were things no "superman" could stop. I doubt that many grown adults thought of firemen like I did before 9/11 but I know that for me, it brought me into the reality that some things even fire fighters couldn't stop.

  4. Blog 2: The impact that 9/11 had on the nation was greater than many historical events in the past. It scared, angered, and shocked the public leaving them breathless in front of the television; however, they could find heros through it all, and those was the firemen. In Farenheit 451, firemen burn things to destroy, making them seem sort of heartless and corrput, but the NY firemen showed bravery that Americans had never seen before. They were shown on TV rescuing thousands of survivors trapped in the rubble, and putting out fires, rather then starting them. I believe that this horrific event led to much respect and trust toward American firefighters.

  5. I Think that firemen today are seen as people that will save our lives from danger and put out the fires not start them. In Fahrenheit 451 the firemen are seen to be the people to start the fires and people seem afraid of them. After 9/11 we see firemen not only as the people to put out the fires but also to go great distances to save lives. Many firemen today are also trained paramedics to save lives and bring lives back.

  6. Blog 2: I believe that 9/11 didn't greatly change the way we see firemen, but it change it enough for people to care. 9/11 affected so many lives that people care and cared about. These firemen risked their lives to save complete strangers lives, and they didn't ever truly give up. When people saw this, they gained more respect for the firemen, people began to become more thankful. It affected a broader group and it was seen by the nation, by the world, and having this tragedy seen by an enormous amount of people, gave more respect to firemen around the world. Since 9/11 affected so many people and so many people were saved by these brave firemen, firemen were truly seen as heroes, people with no fear. Everyone respected them more because they obtained this quality. It's not that perception about firemen was changed that much, it's that it affected a wider population. People always had respect, trust, and care for firemen, but now, more people do and more people want to help the cause by joining, being the heroic type.

  7. Firemen today have a big role. They extinguish burning buildings and wild fires, and rescue people in those burning buildings. To the public, not only do we love them for salvaging our possessions and wild life, but they are great role models. Firemen are to heroes to all the little boys and are looked up to greatly. They are obviously welcomed in every community.

  8. Blog: 1- I agree with Nathan and Jason. The job of a fireman today is to save peoples lives from fires that were started by accident. Also, they have to put the fires out so they don't spread into another house and start fires there. Fireman are also useful support to police men and to be a fireman, they have to be trained in paramedics too so they know how to save lives in other situations.

  9. Blog 1: Today Fireman have big roles in our society. Fireman put out wildfires and burning buildings, like liz said. If someone is caught in a fire the firemen try to save them, although that does not always happen. Fireman are looked up to because there job is one of the most respected. Fireman are welcomed around the world and it is a good thing we have them or who knows what could happen.

  10. Blog 1: I agree with Nathan in that firemen are payed to save peoples lives when they are indanger. They also are looked up to by an enormous amount of people so they cannot "screw up" while doing something other than stopping fires. Firemen are received very warmly and are treated with enormous respect by everyone because of their dangerous jobs.

  11. Blog 2:
In my opinion, 9/11 changed the way people saw things. People could feel safe, yet at the same time be a little worried that something like that may happen to them. Before 9/11 happened, I believe firemen weren't as appreciated as others, like the police, etc. After 9/11 happened and the firemen went into burning and collapsing buildings trying to rescue others, that was when people realized that firemen should be more appreciated, and such. Firemen today, are now greatly appreciated and we are thankful for people who would risk their lives to save someone who was trapped in a fire.

  12. Blog 3: I think that the firemen in Farenheight 451 are feared to some extent but I think that most people treat them as either heroes or everyday people. The firemen are, in a way, the police because they bring "justice" by burning the banned books. Today people are a little afraid of cops but most of people's reaction to their presence is respect. I don't see how the people in Farenheight 451 would veiw the firemen any differently than we veiw police today.

  13. Blog 3: To what Nick C said - True, they strike fear into people for the fact if you are caught with a book, you're burned. However, I dissagree with hatred. People seem to look at the fireman with fear, but they don't hate them. People's hearts are filled with so much fear that there is no room for hate. I think people actually want to support the fireman for upholding the law, but they are just too afraid of them to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Blog 3: I think, like others, that firemen are feared in Fahrenheit 451, but I think they're only feared by the younger generations. In the adult world of Fahrenheit 451, I think the firemen are seen as regular people with regular jobs, and they're nothing more special than a doctor or police man. Since firemen are destructive in Fahrenheit 451, I think they are respected out of fear, because I believe that many believe that if you make a fireman angry, a false alarm may be sounded on you, and the fire department will come and burn your home.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Blog 1: Fireman today are seen as heroes among society. They're role is not only to put out fires, but to save lives and help the community they serve in. I think that above all though they are seen as role models. Children can look up to fireman and see how far helping out the public can go. They are great influences and are usually very kind and helpful. Truly they are one of the greater role models in today's society.

  16. Blog #3:
Although I agree with some of what many people said about the Fireman In Fahrenheit 451 when they said they were feared I also must disagree. I say this because obviously some must believe they are heroes or people wouldn't tip them off about neighbors. I also think that the fear of the fireman is of more of the general look of the Fire as Montag pointed out when he said they all had the same look. So I guess I would have to say it is all in the person judging the fireman.

  17. Blog 1: I agree with what everyone has said so far. Firemen are people that everyone can trust. They help not only to put out fires, but they also save people, their possesions, and in the case of a wildfire they save wildlife. They risk their lives to help people they don't even know, which is very heroic thing for someone to do.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Blog 1: I agree with everything that has been said so far, especially what Reed said about helping the community and public, and what Jason said about how fireman are trained paramedics. The role of a fireman is to protect the public from fires, put out fires, preserve wildlife, and also to help raise awareness of fire safety. I believe that not only do firemen help put out fires, but they try to prevent fires as well by raising public awareness of how fires start and what to do if one happens. A lot of the times fireman participate in school fire drills to make sure students and staff know what to do if a fire ever occurs. I think firemen are generally perceived by the public as selfless heroes. There are so many dangers that fireman face every day to save lives. They have to put the people in danger before themselves, even though many times this means risking their lives.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Blog 1: I agree with what everyone else said. Basically firemen today just put out fires. Firemen have very important jobs. Without firemen I don't know where we would be today. Firemen are very courageous and they save lives.

  20. 9/11 did seriously change the way that anyone looks at fireman. I completely agree with what Nate said, about knowing that they are not invincible as we all once thought. I also think it was to show everyone that firemen and any man in uniform is contributing something to help us fight as a nation. I feel as though while many people respected fireman, and police, and different branches of the military; the wake up call of 9/11 and the war has made people more aware and shown that this isn't a job anyone can do. You have to be brave, and prepared for disappointment when things don't always work out the way you want them to.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Blog 1: I pretty much agree with everyone else who has blogged about this topic especially Reed. The job of a fireman is to extinguish fires and get people out of harms way. They save people during fires but also when other things happen too, like a bad car accident or any hazardous situation. They can provide emergency medical care because, like Ben and Jason said, they are trained paramedics. Firemen are hugely respected because of what they do, but they are also just people who set excellent examples because of their selflessness while preforming their job.

  22. Blog #2: 9/11 made me very proud of firemen. I think it is a very respectable job. Some thought lower of firemen because someone they knew might not have been saved, even though they did their best. I was amazed by the amount of people that were whisked away from death on that day all thanks to the firemen there. A family friend of mine knew someone that was called to duty on 9/11 and has retold what she heard from her friend. The thought of the job terrifies me! So much responsibility would be trust on your shoulders, and I think that 9/11 helped prove how well our firemen handle that.

  23. I feel that the citizens in the book are all afraid of the firemen. One because the break into your house and burn everything, not just your books. Just the fact that they start fires and dont put them out, that they let the fire consume everything unlike our firemen whos job is to put out fires that would burn down houses and the belongings inside of them. I know that I would be afraid of those firemen, because they could take you to jail and burn down your house.

  24. How did 9/11 change perceptions of firemen?

At first, I think 9/11 really made everyone think of military personnel and firemen as heroes. They got recognized for all the heroic things they did on a daily basis, and with good reason, because they risk their lives every day for us. But 9/11 happened eight years ago, and people tend to forget things like that. How often do we as ordinary civilians actually think about 9/11 and remember what happened to our country that day? We are in Colorado, so many of us were no directly connected to that tragedy. Over time, I think people have definitely forgotten what heroes firemen are. If you are a religious person and pray, ask yourself how many times you pray for the safety of these men and women and give thanks that they protect us. I think that we take firemen for granted a lot now days. We never stop to think about them unless we need them, like in the face of huge tragedy like 9/11. But on a daily basis, I would say that perceptions haven't changed a lot.

I would have to disagree with people who say that firemen are greatly appreciated today. They SHOULD be appreciated by everyone, everyday, but they aren’t. We don’t appreciate them until we need the, like on 9/11.

In a short answer: immediately after 9/11, firemen were viewed as heroes, but now, eight years later, we barely even have time to think about them anymore. And sadly, that probably won't change until we as a whole country need them again.

  25. Question 1:

Firemen today have mainly one role and that is to put out fires. They save people who are in danger and try to help keep the city fire free. I think that firemen today are perceived as being heroes, yes, but I do not think that people give enough time to think about them until something truly bad dealing with fire hurts them in some way or another. Laurenl said that she thinks over time people have forgotten what real firemen are and I completely agree. You really don't know what heroes are until they save someone you love and care for, or yourself from a fire. They are always there waiting to go save another life and put out another fire but most people don't think about that. So, in short, people should, and some do, perceive firemen as heroes, but I also don't think they are given enough credit as they deserve.

  26. Blog 1: I agree with many others when they say that firemen's job is to save others and stop fires. But at the same time, i think they also kind of raise fear in the public as they do in Fahrenheit 451.
i realize that many will not agree with me. but just last tuesday, i had just gotten home from school and gotten a snack. all of a sudden i see a firetruck, lights flashing and everything, pull up infront of my neighbor's house. the same thing had happened a few months ago--one of our neighbors had had a stroke or something and almost died. so, of course, i was scared.
In Fahrenheit 451 the fear of firemen comes from them destroying people's houses as well as their books. (and possibly burning the people in the house?) But it real life, as well as them being heros, i feel that firemen also frighten the public in some ways when they appear to have been called by thoes you know.

  27. Blog 1: I agree with everyone when they say that firemen put out fires and save peoples lives. That’s their job, so they have to. I also agree with Courtney. Usually when I see a fire truck, it freaks me out a little bit. I have no idea what happened, or where they’re going. I was at my friends’ house the other day, and her dad had a seizure. The firefighters came, and so did most of her neighbors because they were curious and scared. The firefighters today, and in Fahrenheit 451 usually are feared by different people.

  28. 2. I think that the our perceptions on firemen changed tremendously after 9/11. Before, we all knew that firemen would come and save you or whatever. But when they went running into the burning World Trade Centers, I think we realized just how dedicated they are to helping those that need it. Instead of being just a thought in the back of our head, we got a slap in face and discovered their selflessness.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 3) I think the firemen are viewed differently by every person. Depending on the person, they could be scared of, feel hatred toward, or respect them. If a person has had them march in to their house and set it on fire they probably feel hatred. These firemen destroyed their belongings and didn’t think twice about it. Most who don’t approve of the law will either be scared of them or not respect them. Other people will respect them because its their job and according to the government they are protecting the people.

  30. When 9/11 happened, even though I was seven I wasn’t sure what was going on but I remember allot about the firefighters. I use to be obsessed with them in the first place but after 9/11 happened I saw the other side of them. We wrote them a letter, saw pictures of them and heard what they did. This made me see them as heroic people willing to die for there country to save others, and only second to those in the armed forces. After that day every time I hear a siren, I think of how brave they are to go out at the sound of the siren and how they risk there lives to save lives.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Blog 2: I believe everyone's perception of fireman changed after 9/11. I have to agree with Nate K when he said firemen aren't that "invincible forece everyone thought them as. As kids, one would only hear of the great actions of the fireman, conquering everything in his path, and that was changed after 9/11. It was a reality check. Though, I do feel as if we can put more trust into firemen today because of what they accomplished that day. They weren't trained for the possible terrorist, but they came to th World's Trade Center and risked their lives to recover bodies of people. This shows true bravery and why firemen deserve way more respect than they are granted. Also, agreeing with Lauren L, I see people forgetting what happend which is not what the firemen deserve. Eventhough American's perspective has changed about firemen, I believe we stll need to show more respect and graditude towards the people who risk their lives for us.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Blog 2: I believe that sine the time of 9/11 our everyday outlook to fireman has not greatly changed. Eight years later we try to hide away the memory of what happenned that dreadful day. As we try to forget that memory we also forget those that risked their lives to save others. Many people would not run straight into a burning and collapsing building just to save some random stranger's life, but there are the few that do. My perception at the time was like Nate said, that fireman were all powerful and invincable. Many people never think that there is even a chance that the fireman might lose. We seem to always see them on the winning side, putting out the fire and saving everyone engulfed in it. Because of this perception we tend to not appreciate fireman as much as we should. It's like the fact that you cannot be blissful unless you have tasted utter sorrow. Because we always see the fireman winning we tend to think that it was no hard task, and we lose some of that appreciation. I think that it is rather sad how we seem to only respect and appreciate fireman when a big disaster comes and they answered the call to help.

  33. 1. Describe the role of firemen today; how are they generally received by the public?

Firemen today are seen as an authority figure. When there is a chance of fire they show up. By them showing up they keep the public calm and safe. Firemen are seen as helpful people, that want to save your home and life. Generally the public is welcoming to them, this is similar to the book. The public welcomes them as law inforcers. Except for the fact that they destroy your home instead of saving it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. Today, a fireman's role is to prevent and put out house fires and wildfires. This role is very important because it protects human life and the state of the environment. Due to this importance, the public regards them as courageous heroes that risk there lives for the safety of others' lives. In general, firemen receive a positive light from the public.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 2. I agree with most of the others' answer to this question. Firemen were perceived with a less than important role in our society, at least for me, before 9/11. But after, they showed me how they can not only put out fires but more importantly save lives as well. They can play a vital role in the survival of many people in small-fire situations.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. Firemen today are very important in society today. They save lives and property. I agree with kelly p. though that sometimes people see a firetruck coming to a place near them. They also keep the public calm and safe like zoe w said. I think that firemen are a little less respected than they should be too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree, Firemen are looked upon as people who save lives. As we look back, 9/11 changed the perception of firefighters in tow ways. People either had their perception of firefighters being angles who could cave everyone destroyed because this did not happen. Others may have seen that although the firemen could not save everyone, they gave up their own life in order to save someone else. My perception of a firefighter changed because I thought they were just doing their job. Until 9/11 I never thought what it meant, to have such a hard job. They sacrifice everyday and make life or death decisions that effect not only other people but most importantly themselves. They are true heroes who by living their lives and performing their duties, save average people everyday and make our world a better place.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Blog 2: I don't think that the perception of fireman changed drastically after 9/11. Even to this day we all view them to be good citizens that help us all. During 9/11 we didn't doubt them, we were just disappointed that they couldn't conquer the task, that happens to everyone almost everyday. I'm not saying we didn't think about fireman during 9/11 but I think that 9/11 made us think more about how other countries view us and if we really are as safe as the government says.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. The role of firemen is to not only put out fires but to also save people and risk their life to do that. No matter who it is, a fireman is willing to put their life in danger to save them. They try to stop the fire as fast as possible but the most important thing to save is the human inside the burning house. By saving the people first, the general public is very gracious to the firefighters. They are everyday heros in peoples minds and are very respected. Children and adults look up to them knowing what a respectable and emotional job it is. They know not everyone can see the things they see and still work at a job like that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Q1) Firemen are there to put out fires, in houses and wilderness and to keep people safe. I agree with what Ian O. said and all of the people he agreed with. Firemen are respected and placed somewhat highly in our society. They are important and a big part in our lives. They are almost viewed as heroes and they should be too. They are extremely brave and self-less as they are willing to throw themselves into a fire so save someone or something. Even pets mean something to them; if it is beneficial to the public or the people they are saving they will do it regardless of how it affects them. I also agree with malbyn in saying they protect human life and also our environment. I respect them highly and the public does too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Q1) I agree strongly with the above comments on firemen. They are very highly respected and they are one of the few things consistent in our society. What I mean by that is everybody can depend on Firemen to help solve problems, such as get a cat from a tree or remove somebodies tongue from a frozen flag pole. And like what Rachel C. said they are selfless and very highly respected by our public.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 3. I agree with Linsey because the views of the firefighters depends on the person. Clarisse, for example, shows no fear when talking to Montag. However, during this conversation, she mentions those who are scared of firefighters. I believe a reason that Clarisse is not afraid of firefighters is due to her curiosity. She is very intrigued so she doesn't form an opinion. This could also be true for others. They may not enirely believe all the stories they've heard, so they choose not to form an opinion based on these stories. On the other hand, there are those who will entirely believe everything they hear about firefighters. This group of people will fear the firefighters. I believe that the public's opinion is solely based on one's willingness to believe everything and act on the information given.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Q2) My perception of fireman never changed after 9/11. I was one of those kids in kindergarden that wanted to be a fireman when i grew up. I always thought it was a glamorous and glorious job. It definately is an important job but it really hasn't changed much since 9/11. The only thing that changed a lot after 9/11 is security everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1). I think firemen's jobs are known as glorious and heroic. Firemen are known to help the poeple, and everybody loves firemen. They get alot of respect and not many people are afriad of them. The role of a fireman is not only to put out fires, but to be mentors and rolemodels to little kids, with big dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Like the others, I agree that firemen today are perceived as heroes. Today’s firemen help the people by rescuing their lives and putting out fires. They are extremely admirable and selfless people. This showed very much in 9/11 because the firefighters were extremely heroic trying the hardest that they could to save the people. In Fahrenheit 451 firemen are perceived much differently. It’s not that the community thinks that they are bad, but their job is considered tough. The adults seem to think of the job like almost any other job, but the children in the community are probably a little bit intimidated by them. The reader would think that the firemen are destructive people, but in this book they might be considered productive if the people dislike books more than they dislike fire. The fact that they use fire in their work is probably a main factor of why the people view the firemen in this way. In our world the firemen fight fire, but these firemen start the flame and could be more dangerous to the people. Overall I think that the people view the firemen as the tough and possibly dangerous but not necessarily bad people, whereas in our lives the firemen are the ones always saving the day.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 3. It seems evident that the community in Fahrenheit 451 is, for the most part, afraid of firefighters. Clarisse tells Guy that she is not afraid of him, as if it is standard for people to fear the firefighters. She is likely one of the only people that doesn't fear the firefighters. I think the people fear the firefighters because they know what they do, and people know that by burning the books, something is being held back from them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Question #3

People are scared of the fireman. I agree with Katie when she says that its not that the community thinks they are bad. I think that people just fear that job, and the jobholders, not necessarily fearing them as people. People may think that the firemen are dangerous, because that is all they know them as. If someone has a book, and a firemen comes and sets their house on fire, then yeah that's kinda dangerous. Setting houses on fire is all the people know that the firemen do. Nobody really knows the firemen outside of their jobs. I think one reason Clarisse is not scared of Montag is because she views him as a person, and not as a fireman.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I disagree with what Katie and Suzy said. I don't think the firemen scare people at all. Most of the citizens don't even notice them because they don't have to worry about them taking their books. Because they don't have books! When Montag and his crew burned the lady's house with her books in it, most of the people came out to watch. Clarisse thinks its fascinating that Guy is a fireman also. If people were truly afraid of the firemen, they would do their best to avoid them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree with Liz and Christina that firemen nowadays are looked upon with awe. They have a duty to protect our society, and they complete that task with ease and skill. We respect them for this. They are revered and people think of them as heroes and great role models. I know from experience that the first thing I ever wanted to be was a firefighter.
