Censorship

Hey everyone-
Third Hour: I remembered to give you each a number for your blog responses. Do the response according to what I assigned in class.

Fourth hour: I forgot. Please answer the number according to your last name initial: a-f answer #1; g-n answer #2; m-z answer #3. Sorry for the confusion.

1. Is it okay to have books on making bombs in the school library?
2. Will banning books keep people from reading them?
3. Television shows are censored, so are song lyrics—what makes books different?

  1. I believe that books are not censored because not all people who have the power to censor things will be willing to censor all books that need to be, so why would they censor some books and not others? Also, books can be interpreted many different ways, so if one person thinks that people shouldn't read a particular book, another person may not agree with them. This is different from TV and songs because the general public will not read all books, but many people listen to the radio and watch the news, so if there is inappropriate things in either, the expectation is that it will be taken out. I don't think this expectation extends to books at all in our society.

  2. When songs and movies are censored normally its because of foul language or inappropriate content. What makes books so different than the others is that in a book you need every sensory and descriptive elements that you can use to make the book powerful and to express the emotions of the character. In movies however you can see the emotions on the characters face. Also in songs it may tell a story but you can tell the persons emotions by listening to their tones that they sing in. In books you do not have the benefit of seeing or hearing emotions all you have is the descriptive words. These things make books not only more powerful but if you were to take them away or change the words you would lose some of the feeling, power, and effectiveness of those words which, in some cases, would ruin the book completely.

  3. Books are not limited to the types of people that read them. Usually, if you are younger, your parents will tell you if you are aloud or not aloud to read a book. This is not like watching tv. If you parents know you are on a cenosred tv channel. They willallow you to watch the programs displayed on that channel because they have previewed and edited by the station already. It is impossible to do this with books because there is not a producer or station worker there to edit out the inappropriate parts of the book. Instead the book is edited for gramatical errors and such. If the books were edited in such a way, then it would be robbing the creativity the artists have thought to write the book on. I belive this is the reason books are not edited for censorship. The un-edited versions of shows can be previewed on an adult channel where the adults may watch it without having to worry about their kids because they're watching the censored version. Therefore there is no robbing of the creativity either. Most children don't read mature books either so there would be no need to censor the books. On the hand of Tv, children watch tv almost every day where there is sex, drugs and violence, but it can be edited out for precisely that reason.

  4. I believe that having a book on how to make bombs in a school library is really the choice of the school's faculty. My opinion in the matter is that if the school library already has a book on making bombs, then they should just let it be unless something occurs like a school bombing. However, on the other hand a library should not specificaly go looking for an excellent book on how to make bombs. I guess what I am trying to say, is that every book has a right to be in a school library unless something pertaining to that school has occurred and renting out that book would endanger the school and everyone in it.Also, if someone was really intent on killing someone they most likely wouldn't go to a school library to check out a book. There are many other locations to get that information, and the most likely spot, would be the internet.

  5. No, I do not think that it is acceptable to have books about bombs accessible to students in their libraries. This kind of information is inappropriate for students to read. You would never know what that information would be used for. Also, with the incidences of violence in schools that have seemed to become more prevalent, it would not be appropriate to have this kind of information so readily available to students in a school setting. This is the kind of information could potentially be used to harm other students. A school should be a safe environment where students feel secure and protected, not where dangerous materials are readily available. I think this kind of censorship in schools is necessary because it is trying to keep students safe and protected. However I don't think that censorship in a whole nation or society is acceptable as adults should be able to make decisions on their own which they think are appropriate.

  6. I don’t think that it’s ok to have books on making bombs in the school library. I believe that things can and will probably go wrong if we have that type of book in our library. First off, parents will be super mad if they find that out, I mean their kids will be in danger, and you never know who will check that book out. Referring to Columbine, that was absolutely horrifying. If the kid would have checked out a book on making bombs, things could have been so much worse, and that is saying a lot. Schools should be safe for students and teachers and that could be untrue if there are bomb making books in our library. It’s also completely inappropriate. In the real world though, people can make their own decisions, although they might be harming. However students can be mad about one little thing, and having that type of book can lead to an atrocious thing.

  7. Will banning books keep people from reading them?

No, absolutely not. There are lots of things that are banned, or against the law, and people choose to do them anyway. For example, it's against the law to drive over the speed limit, but people still do when they are in a hurry. It's against the law for minors to smoke and drink, but some still do anyway. Just because you decide to ban something doesn't mean that people won't still look at the banned item. Books have been a part of our culture for hundreds of years and many people would be willing to risk breaking a law to continue reading books. There are some countries where practicing certain religions are banned, but people still gather and worship anyway. Reading books in similar. If people are willing to risk their lives for religion, many would also being willing to risk punishment for knowledge as well. For people who have no internet access, books may be their only source of knowledge. If people are willing to risk punishment for smoking or speeding over the limit, many others would be wiling to risk punishment for knowledge. Knowledge is much more valuable than saving yourself a few extra minutes by speeding or relaxing yourself by smoking a cigarette. A ban would definitely not keep people from reading.

  8. I think that there is a definite distinction between censory in songs and television shows and censory in books. Television shows and songs are more easily accessible to the general public. A young child can flip on the TV or the radio and there's the show or song. Books, on the other hand, must be more specifically sought out. Besides, books with
innapropriate content will likely be read by an appropriate age group, as the reading level will correspond to the content. If the book is at a third grade reading level, the content likely will not be explicit, and vis versa.

    ReplyDelete
  9. People will still read books if they are banned. It's human nature to want something that you aren't supposed to have. In fact, banning something might make people want to do it that much more. Even if the punishment for breaking the ban on books was severe (like in Fahrenheit 451) people would still read books. Books not only help us to learn and to grow mentally, but also to help us escape and dream. Just as Lauren said, books are central to our culture. The bible, for example is central to the Christian faith. People would continue to read it even if it was banned, it's what they believe. Some people only read because they are required to; however, many more people love to read and would not abide by any sort of ban on a book.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Banning books will not keep people from reading them. This is evident now because we, as a class, are reading books that are banned. Though these books are ban, it's not keeping us from reading them. The Bible is considered a banned book, but this makes no difference to people who believe in Catholicism. The Bible is taught to and read by young kids, old people everyday, and yet, it's considered banned. Parents may prevent their own children from reading certain books, and this would be considered banned books as well. Obviously, not all children are going to listen to their parents. They are most likely going to go and read the book for the only reason to defy what their parents said and challenge the system. They want to be rebellious and do something they aren't allowed to do. I believe this also applies to teenagers and young adults at times too. Banning books aren't going to keep people from reading them.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Question 2:

I believe that just because you ban a book does not mean that people will not read it. People will want to challenge the system by reading the books that are banned. Also, I know that when I was younger I did not know what banned books were, but I ended up reading some of them. Even if parents tell their child that they cannot read a certain book, the child will find a way to read it in the end.
Also, in my opinion, I think that some parents get too carried away by not letting their child read certain books. It's only a book, and if the kid is ready to read it, then the adult should let them

  12. Question 1:

In a school library, it is ok to have books on the making of bombs. Some students may be interested in that kind of science. A book on bombs does not mean that it has specific instructions on how to make one. The main question that would arise is who is doing the censorship by deciding if it is allowed or not? And if they are banning science books, what will be next.

  13. #3. Television shows are censored, so are song lyrics—what makes books different?

I think that since music and television shows are more easily accessed by the public and the networks in those genres target the younger public, therefore it has to be more censored. The reading of books, in most cases, is less common, wherefore books can be less censored. I agree with Derek on the matter of the reading levels of the public and how that affects the censorship of the books.

  14. Question 2-
I do not believe that banning books will keep people from reading them. Sure there may be more people who will not read them but some people would read them. Reading lets you explore worlds you never knew existed, even things you could never have dreamt and some people live off of knowing things they never would have known, or reading things they never had even thought of. Too many people love to read and for some people it becomes a part of their life. When you ban a book, yes, it is putting restrictions on reading it, but not all people would follow that. Also, it doesn't mean every person banned it. A banned book is on a banned book list which does not mean it is banned all around the world. I am sure a lot of books have been put up to be banned for silly reasons. There is always someone out there who can find a reason why people shouldn't read something but the person who disagrees with them will go ahead and read that book. You can't really stop them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. No, it is not ok for there to be books in a school library instructing one on how to make bombs. I say this because there shouldn’t be any material what so ever that could cause harm to oneself or others. It is unfair to students if someone wants to make a bomb to destroy the school and can go to the library in their off time to figure out how to do it. Also, school directors and administrators have to right to control what is put in the library. If an administrator deems a book inappropriate for students, it is taken out of the library. I would think that most administrators would believe that a book on making bombs or weapons is inappropriate and would remove it. So, having books instructing someone on how to construct a bomb shouldn’t be allowed in a school library.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Question 3:

I don't think there is a such a big difference in the monitoring of tv shows and songs verses books. TV shows tell you whether there is going to be innapropriate content in a show and who the show is meant to be watched by, by putting the rating such as pg 13. Songs also tell you whether it is explicit or not. Most books also put on the back what the reading level is and whom it is appropriate for.

  17. Blog #1. What good could come from a book about bombs in a school library. It is a bad influence even if a student wants to do something at home. This may sound drastic and i'm not saying that any kids in a school is going to make a bomb. But think about all of the school shootings. A bomb is the same idea and teased and twisted kids may get bad ideas. No science, math, reading, history, english, spanish, or PE class would need or even have anything to do with bombs. If the book is kept on the shelf, bad things may come. The odds aren't great that someone would actually do that but what if?

  18. Question 2:
No, i do not believe that banning a book, or anything for that matter, will keep the public from reading it. Books are banned because of explicit or controversal content, and there are fans of this type of literature and they will read what they want. In countries like the U.S., books are banned for different circumstances, but they are not made illegal for those independant readers; however, there are the countries that do make it illegal to read a banned book, in which case a larger percentage of the public would refrain. I have to disagree with Sandra who wrote "Im sure a lot of books have been put up to be banned for silly reasons..." this is not relevent due to the fact that most of the reasons are for greater purposes. A government would obviously not want its people to gain thoughts of overthrowing it; and a mother does not want thier child running around the house cursing and being provocative. I think that banning books is a fair procedure; yet, making them illegal is something I would fight against.

  19. Question #2:
I don’t think that if books are banned people won’t read them because people would want them back. They provide us with knowledge, entertainment and they inform us. People would stand against society and fight back because of this. If books were banned how else would we transfer knowledge down to the next generation? Yes there internet but most of the information going there is not revised and is submitted by someone who has no idea what they are talking about. And most of the information on the internet that’s not bogus is from a book. So banning books wouldn’t stop people from reading them cause of the knowledge they provide for our society to keep moving on.

  20. I think that it is both good and bad to have books about making bombs in the library. On the first hand there is no harm in having them there unless someone uses the books to make a bomb for the wrong reason. If they are already there why not just leave it? I also think that it can help some kids who are interested in science and engineering because they can learn more about building things in general. I think it is bad because some kids might use the books for the wrong reasons and bad causes might happen from the cause of these books.

  21. I believe that books are censored to a point where you can get a visual picture of what is going on but not so much that it will create harsh and unwanted images. In television shows and songs it is much different beacause tv shows everything and it warns you what content there will be so that is on your part whether or not to watch it and same with songs because rappers these days leave nothing out so again it is up to the listeners.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don’t think that banning a book helps prevent people from reading books. The banning of a book only states that a certain person or a group of people disagrees with an aspect of the book. This does not mean that everyone shares the same views. Even though some books are banned they might have meanings that a school wants their students to take out of the text. Some of the books on the list were books that I’ve already read or have known others to read in school before. Some of the banned books are classics and ones that most people end up reading. Also, a lot of the times, people don’t know that the book is banned when they pick it up off of the shelf. When I read the banned book list, I was very surprised at some of the titles included in the list. Lastly, putting a ban on a book does not control a person’s reading it. They have the right to do whatever they want, and if they want to read the book they can. Some people don’t follow the rules when they should so they won’t think twice about whether a book is banned or not. People will do what it takes to get something they really want and if it is reading a banned book, they will not be kept from it.

  23. It is bad to have books on making bombs in the school library because some people may use the books for the wrong reason. Then if they did set bombs off at school innocent people would be killed. That would not be fair to the kids families'. What the kids ever done to deserve that kind of treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Question Number 3:

I think that censoring movies and television shows is probably a good thing because when kids and some older more unstable people watch movies, they have a picture in there head. When listening to music you have a a beat and rhythm to associate what a song is talking about so there has to be censorship because people will be able to remember what a song is about through the rhythm. Books however should not be censored because books show facts and often puts stuff in perspective without (depending on the book) showing no bias. People must learn things at some point in life but it is up to there teachers and guardians when they learn it. So books are a useful tool because often you make your own connections to the uncensored material but music is too easy for young people to get there hands on and with youtube and other viewing sights, videos are also too easy for people to get there hands on so therefore people can get the material at a very young age. So censoring movies and music is a good thing because they are much easier to get peoples hands on.

  25. blog 1.}I think it is unacceptable to have books on making bombs in the library. It would be like inviting another columbine to happen. Knowledge is powerful and with the right knowledge anything can happen, and it will not always be good. High school students are still maturing mentally that is why teenagers have to wait for voting and the drinking age because some cant yet be trusted with that responsibility yet. And if you cant trust them with voting why trust them with bombs.

  26. 1. I believe it is okay to have books about making bombs in the school library. Not because the information is "good", or "proper", or whatever you want to call it, but because of what it symbolizes. It symbolizes freedom of information. If books that are considered "bad" are removed from libraries, then many books that are important to society could be taken out. There is no way to regulate what is good or bad, right or wrong, it is all based on opinion. I'd also like to point out the hypocrisy in this. We are currently fighting a war in which explosives (bombs) are used. This will always be happening. When we say to kids that they are not allowed to do this because it is bad, but then turn on the television and let them watch war and explosions, we cannot expect them to know what is "right". I do not know what kind of bombs the book is instructing either. It could be instructions for little baking soda and vinegar bombs, which is little more than a boom from a water bottle.

  27. I do not think that banning books will keep people from reading them. For an example, our class is reading a book that is banned. It would not make a difference to wether or not the book is banned we would read it anyway. Books teach us so much about culture, history and just day to day life and banning them would not make a difference to wether peole read them or not.

    ReplyDelete
  28. #3. I think that books are differnt because there are so many of them in the world. The amount of music and tv shows isn't even close to the number of books that exist in the world today. When you listen to music, it stays with you and so does tv beacuse you see it or hear it. People are exposed to all sorts of media including these three. I think music and tv are the easiest things to be censored and protect people from.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What makes books different from censored television shows and song lyrics is the strong opinion that effects the way we pervieve an issue or aspect of life. Books are looked at differently because the bias of the author is very clear when written. Many people believe that by labeling a book as banned would represent that its content and message isn't the "right" way to think. When banning books is really just a way of saying, I don't agree with the author and you shouldn't either.

I don't think there should be books that have instructions to make bombs. It teaches students dangerous methods that I doubt anyone will need to use. I just don't understand why students in our school need to know how to make a bomb and how it keeps our school safe.

  31. I feel that there shouldn't be books about makeing bombs in the school library. There shouldn't be this material in our school because it could potentially be somewhat misguiding and very dangerous if there happened to be some vengeful teenager who came into contact with it.

  32. Blog2. I do not believe that banning books will keep people from reading them. These books have been banned for the content within the pages, but to some people, this is the type of reading they enjoy. Just because a book is banned does not mean no one will read them, because banning something does not put a very strong limitation over anything. Just because someone sees a book as provocative and something that should not be read does not mean that others feel the same way. The views of banning certain books are specific to a single person. A person might learn something from a banned book, or get something out of it. Just putting a ban on a book will not keep people from reading that book. We are free to choose whatever we want to read here, whether the text is banned or not.

  33. Question #3
Even though it seems like books should be censored along with televison and songs the difference between books and movies are huge. While reading a book you have to picture what the author is trying to convey instead of watching it appear on a televison screen. If a young child opens a book and reads a page that might not be appropriate for them, it will not effect them as much as seeing a graphic picture on a TV show or hearing bad words and then repeating them. Ultimately books should probably be censored but that takes away from the individuality each author creates for him or herself when writing a piece of literature.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Television shows and songs are censored because they are more accessible to people. Books have to be checked out or bought in order to read therefore it is the consumer’s choice on the content in it. Television and songs can be heard or seen non-intentionally. For example parents can more easily censor books than television and songs themselves. Books also require a certain level of education to comprehend them. A four year old could pick up a book they aren’t supposed to read and not fully understand it. If they hear it or see it on television it is easier for them to understand and maybe replicate the behavior.

  35. I think that t.v. and lyrics to songs are different than books because when you read a book, you are being absorbed into a story which could affect the way you think, act, or believe. while when you listen to a song or watch a telivision show, yes it could influence you in the same way, but it does not have the same affect that a book does. But on the other side of things, people these days are definatly more exposed to what they listen to on the radio and what they see on t.v. because it is more easily accessible. but, in the long run, i believe that books touch people and really sink in more than t.v. or song lyrics.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe books aren't censored where as song lyrics and television programs are for several reasons. To begin, television shows and songs are typically advertised to the public. This means that they need to be appropriate for the public. This differs from a book because books aren't as advertised and aren't necessarily for the entire public. In addition, Television programs and songs are for a wide range of people. Language and content are specific to everyone. That is why these songs and show are regulated to appeal to a mass. books are different. Books express individuality and and are taste specific. This allows authors to choose their own content and language because they don't have to appeal to a mass. That is not the goal of wirting. Writing is an expression of a person and is published for others to relate to in some way. Finally, books are a decreasing form of entertainment. It is far more likely for people to watch T.V. or listen to music rather than read a book. More and more youths are diverging away from reading which is why there is more censorship in audio and visual entertainment. Books, being the dieing entertainment, don't need to be censored because the people who enjoy reading them are typically older and are from a different generation. It goes to show how technology ends up affecting censorship in the present and future society.

  37. I do not think that is ok to have a book about bombs in the school library. This sort of book should not be allowed in the school library because it may motivate the making of a bomb that could harm other students. This is a good kind of censorship because it promotes the safety of the students at the school. Also the somewhat recent events of violence at schools would make a school administration keep that book out of their library.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I believe that a book instructing how to make bombs should not be allowed in school libraries. This would put many, many kids in harm’s way. If any student had the open opportunity to construct a weapon that could possibly harm themselves or other, there wouldn't be places of safety. For the most part, our school is a place of security. We know that our adult supervisors will do everything possible to keep us from danger. So if they allowed a book instructing students how to make a bomb, all that effort would be wasted. The day when some student brings in their home-made bomb would be inevitable. Also, I think it would be very hypocritical of the school directors. No type of weapon is allowed on campus. Whether it is a nerf gun, rubber knife, or a real gun or knife, the student who brings it in is going to be in a lot of trouble. So to have a bomb-making book on campus would be very hypocritical. That is why I think that books on how to make bombs should not be allowed on campus.

  39. In my opinion books about making bombs should not be allowed in school libraries. Some crazy kid could get their hands on one. Something I never want to see in my high school career is a home made bomb going off in my school. This type of book should be banned and kept out because it has the capability of posing a direct threat and harming people. They do not allow books about how to make drugs and bomb making books are in the same category. They should not be allowed to ensure safety to all students.

  40. I do not think that banning books would keep people from reading them mostly because we have so many resources. If they just ban books then we can most likely find their content online but if they ban all reading material then it would probably be harder. Also, there are so many books in the world it would be hard for whoever is banning them to destroy them all. I also think that banning the books could actually escalate the exact thing the governmebnt would be trying to stop like with what happened in the prohibition.

  41. I believe that books on making bombs should not be allowed in libraries. Someone with bad intents could easily get hold of different ways to make a bomb and severely harm innocent civilians. I do think that books on the invention and advancement of the nuclear bomb should be allowed though. People should be able to learn about the advancement of science and technology, but not how to blow up a school.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Books are not different I think that you should be able to censor innapropriate or bad things in books just like you can in movies. It is nice to take that precaution because books can stimulate more vivid images than movies can in your mind.

  43. Yes I think it is okay to have books on making bombs in the library. In science class, you start off learning about atoms and what they're made of. Then you start progressing and start to realize that they are inside many things and help create many things. One of these things are bombs. These things can be found in books in the the library, and there is nothing wrong with learning about these things. If it was against the school curriculum, then they wouldn't be teaching it to us.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Censorship of books can tend to be a very touchy topic. All around the world books have been made and then banned. Does it make sense to ban books? In some cases this is so as some books can influence certain ideas in young minds that don't quite know how to comprehend them. On the other side censorship is a huge limitation on people. Censorship can even change the world through the limitation of ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It is fairly obvious that there should not be books about making bombs in the school library. There should not be any books that could potentially cause harm to the reader or others. Although to some extent censorship is ok In other cases it is not justified and not right. It is ok when it is to protect people from danger or when books are not appropriate for younger children. When it is just to keep ideas from being heard it is not ok

  46. Question 3
In song lyrics being censored, it is because they can be played on the radio, and available for younger ears. Television is censored because it is public, and anyone (again small children) may here it, and that can be offensive. I think books are not censored because people feel that if an adult des not want there child reading the book, then the child won't. Of course that is not always true, just because someone is told something doesn't mean they will do it. So really books are no different, they can do the same thing as lyrics to a song, which are just words put to music. I feel that if someone feels lyrics and tv should be censored, so should books. There is really not a difference.

I think that having books on how to make bombs in the school library would not necessarily affect anyone in any way. People do not need books to teach them things like this and they will not go looking for them in a school library. This material is much more easily accessible on the internet. There is also no reason for the school to want to include these books in their libraries. It is not like in the case of other censored books that could possibly benefit the students in a positive way. Schools should be allowed to ban books like these but they should not ever have the need.

  48. A: Books are written a certain way. They are supposed to strike an emotion. If a book was censored tis would defeat the purpose of writting words. Books are different because you have to have a certain level of thinking to understand the book to begin with. Whereas TV and songs are just words you hear and can be offensive. Reading a book means you are choosing to read the words, so they don't need to be censored.

  49. Banning book will certianly not keep people from reading them. While a great number of people will not read them for fear of the consequences, another group relishes "challening the system" and will continue to read. In any society, there will always be people who don't follow laws or do what is expected of them. It is the human nature to go against what is said to do, but it is someone's desire to restrain this nature and follow the rules that will set apart those who will follow the system and not read books, and those who pleasure themselves in challenging the system and will read books.

  50. I think that books should be cencored depending on the content they hold. Obviously a book shouldnt be cencored of its about kittens and rainbows, but i could see where people would think that some books should be cencored. For instance, if a certain book is all about anarchy and world domination, then someone has the right to cencor it, but only if it had content that strongly offended a group of people or a belief. A lot of the time when you watch reality T.V. or listen to talk show, they will bleep out a word or blurr a picture in the hopes that it wont poison the young minds of children or strongly opinionated adults. I believe this is also a good reason to cencor things.

  51. I think that it's different for music and books to be censored because when music uses bad language, it's usually not for a good reason. If a book has bad language or sexual content, it goes along with the story and usually has a deeper meaning. Books have a message most of the time and songs that have bad language or sexual content usually don't have much of a meaning or reason to do that.

  52. Blog 3: I think that books aren't censored like tv is because tv is more available to more people and because it's harder to decide whether or not the content on tv is what you want to be watching. It's much easier to read the summary of the book and decide that reading about drugs isn't what you want to do, than change the channel the nanosecond you realize that the content is unacceptable in your opinion. Who knows what you might see when you turn on the tv, and in the second it takes to change the channel, you may have witnessed an image that scars you for life. Books on the other hand can be "screened" and it's left up to you as to whether or not you choose to read it.

  53. Question #3

I think books are different because books are harder to censor than television and song lyrics. With TV shows, some may be inappropriate but when they are shown, the bad stuff can just be edited or cut out. Same with song lyrics. On the radio they play the clean versions of songs, but you can still buy the uncensored versions. With books its harder to take out the 'bad' parts, because in some cases a whole chapter or many chapters may have to be taken out to make the book acceptable. Another reason that books aren't censored might be because people watch TV and listen to music more than they read books. So the people who censor things might think that it would be better to censor things that more people use.
