  1. I think that Marcus could of won that in a world before the bombings. Ever sense the bombings a new system has been put into place and Marcus hasn't excepted it. This was the principles way of showng Marcus the new order.

  2. I think the principal was trying toput himself in charge. I think its like some animals who make themselves look bigger, like a bearded dragon. He was just trying to prove his point by building imself up to this big in charge kind of guy.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Marcus is fed up with how all the people in power think that the world is coming to an end if there is no security.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I would say that usually the principle controls the school. he chooses who works there and many policies.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow- Who does the outer circle think runs the high school? Who has more power to affect the school's rules, climate, extra curricular activities? Does the principal have the power to call off Homecoming???

    ReplyDelete
  6. He is projecting power and control so that Marcus won't try to do anything to stop him.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree with what Veronica is saying. So far it seems like people think the principal is the bad guy, but what if he has no choice? Maybe he has to act that way because the government is making him. Marcus got his rights taken away, the same thing could happen to the principal.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree with what Reed just said; you have a right to say what you want. But you need to be willing toface the consequence. I think the people in the schools enviorment run the school. While every person as an individual will not effect the school; but if a big group gathers, the school isn't going toexpel and entire school. I think the principal does have the power to call off homecoming, but not everyone would agree. In the end he will probably be over powered, because we have to remember he is just one person.

    ReplyDelete
  9. We may know for a fact that the high school is run by the principle and the board, but we really like to think that we can run the school. we are the reason the school is here, we mostly control whatever doing. But it is a false idea that we have. the principle does have control to call off what he wants but then the students would revoult and try there hardest to change his mind. we'd probably win back the dance and that is why we think we are in control of our school.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Truly the principle does have the power to do as they please they will just have to face protests and punighsments. This is very similar to the government.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Isn't that top-down management? If the teacher cannot control her classroom, the principal steps in. What would happen if students had control of the high school?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think the principal does have the power if he has a good reason for doing it. It can not be just because he doesn't want it to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Remember when we went over the "Who rules the school?" talk? It really comes down to the students because if they complain to their parents then the parents complain to the school board and the students usually get their way. It's just like how when Marcus got suspended and his mom was sympathetic because Marcus had told her about his priciple before.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes Mrs.Moritz the principal has major power over the students, but the students also hugely outnumber te principal so they do have a slight advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think the students ultimatly run the school. What they do effects the wole school. The principal make the rules but the students can always find a way to get around the rules. The principal could cancel Homecoming but the students would'nt allow it. They could find another place to hold it and still have it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @riley- but the point of our first amendment is to have freedom of speech with out fearing punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have no doubt the punishment would be less severe without his history.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The high school would be really chaotic if the students could run it because students would disagree a lot and would just do their own thing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That is why the principle acts like he has total control. So that marcus might believe him and think there is nothing he can do.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The principal can take away all the freedoms that students have. That changes things in the school. He also controls the teachers and can ruin them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that a teacher who preaches what the government wants is going to become a place where only one idea is available. Like we said earlier this year, if you only know one idea, there's really no argument against it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mrs. Moritz- if we had control of highschool, it wouldn't be highschool. it would become a place where education was not our priority.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Is there anyone that can out rule the principal?

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Mmoritz.
I think that people who are as strong willed as Marcus would end up deciding what the school studied if the students controlled classroom. However, it would end up in chaos because kids like Charles and Marcus would disagree and nobody would control them and things would get really ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with zoe. Chaos erupts when there is no conformity. And whenv that happpens, it can't be stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why does the DHS want to increase security, it just makes their job harder. Do they really believe it is helping?

    ReplyDelete
  27. The teacher is encouraging all this discussion and just as the inner circle is saying, she let it get too far. I agree with Laura when she says that Charles is brainwashed by the government and all he knows is how great the government is. Charles is not really shown both sides until Marcus is enlightening him and sharing his viewpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @liz
the superintendent and a large group of parents can out rule the principal

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that if students ran the school, very few kids would actualy get the education they need to survive in life. We would end up growing up to be a generation of teenagers who never grew up.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm sorry my typing iis so bad. I can't type very well :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't think the security levels are helping everyone. Some people propbably disagree with them who will go against the government even if the terrorists are being stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Veronica on account of the governent in this book is beecoming currupt. We keep taking away peoples rights until there is nothing left. Are the people in the inner circle trying to say that th DHS, which is part of the government, is overtaking the government?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why haven't we ever heard very much about the president?

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Matt
I think that Barbara will become a very major character in the story. If the story of M1ck3y can get out there may be an investigation of the prison he stayed at.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't know if being embarassed is the first thought that would cross my mind if I was being tackled to the ground. That is some actions that need to stop and other people would see that and not think how embarassing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Matt
I like Barbara--she's tough and she seems like she has aa plan and wants to help these kids out. She seems to be trustworthy and really wanting to help.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Emily
I wish that the book talked about the President too. I don't how Cory D. makes San Fran so isolated.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Emily- I agree, doe she even know what the Xnetters are? What they are doing? Does he understand what has happened to San Fransico's government??

    ReplyDelete
  39. It is like the president said in the book there is no price to pay for security.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The DHS seems to just be power hungry. They need be in control of every situation. They need to rely more on what happens and stopping that than what could happen.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ultimately, does the President of the United States have THAT MUCH power?

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Matt
I think Barbra is important but I'm not sure how much Marcus should trust her. It would be good to get the story out but what if she's like a modern day thought police?

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Matt and Emily
I think Cory Doctorow does not involve the President a lot becasue he does not want his book to focus on a presidents actions, but on the issue itself.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ Emily

I was wondering the same thing, all we here is about the DHS. And in a situation of national security you would think that there would be more interference from different branches.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Do you think that the terrorists were planning on the DHS freaking out and increasing security. Could there be a terrorist behind the whole DHS thing? It certainly caused chaos and confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Matt F- I mean people around the world have heard about everything and had a response. What is the President doing?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Everyone is talking about how evil and corrupt the DHS is being. Then again we only see Marcus' view. Of course he is biased against the DHS. but really aren't they just trying to do their job. Maybe if Marcus didn't start jamming or anything then the DHS's plans and programs could actually work.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Linsey
I completly agree that the DHS is power hungry, I'm wondering if maybe there is a 'mastermind' behind the DHS. They seem to be this big group who works together to catch people, but is there a head of DHS? Who is the one controlling all these ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @Moritz and everyone who wants to talk about Barbara

I'm curious what she does with Marcus's story. Will it benefit him or not. Don't tell if you've read past chapter 17

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't trust Barbara. She seems way to interested in the Xnet. She knows way to much about all of the technology.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Maybe the terrorists are trying to distract the country with the security, so they can plan something even bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @moritz
The people have the power. Without the people, the PResident wouldn't be there in the first place. And they can get rid of him just as easily.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @Nate
I agree with you. I think a lot of us see the DHS as such an evil group because we get sucked into Marcus' point of view. If this was from the view of the DHS than Marcus would be evil and corrupt.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @Moritz
The president doesn't have that much power but they were elected to office because the majority of people like them. This is important because the president can influence who is put in other places of power and, like today, with a congress, president, and DHS that all have similar social and political outlooks they can change a lot of things.

    ReplyDelete
  55. @Nate- I don't think that their plans would of worked out. It would of just got worse as the DHS figured out more of Americans secrets. Americans would of lost all of the privacy and even more chaos would of be created.

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Linsey
But Barbara has suffered what Marcus has suffered TWICE rather than give up her sources

    ReplyDelete
  57. I thikn Brent had a really good idea, I think that maybe there useing a simple distraction to make us crack down on security and 'look the other direction' accusing teens of terrorism. While there out there planning something huge todestroy America.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't know how smart it was for M1k3y to do his interview. I would think that it would make it easier for people to find him. And it turns more people against him.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Isn't it the media's job to take what they get in an interview and then manipulate the information for the good of ...

    ReplyDelete
  60. @riley/brent There doesn't even need to be another event. Everything that is happening is enough alone to tear America apart.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I trust Barbara to a point but she is still a reporter. Even if you tell a reporter the exact story they can still twist the facts and change it. Hopefully the xnetters will be portrayed as kids trying to help the country from the DHS and not as mini terrorists.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Brandon
    What has Barbara suffered through??

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Zoe- Ok so they know our secrets. How does that hurt us? These are government workers. They take an oath not to abuse their power and I highly doubt their findings wouldn't be posted publically. Yes it's an inconvienience parts of the time. But would you rather lose 10 minutes waiting to be searched or lose the rest of your life because a terrorist walked on a plan with a bomb and wasn't searched?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Don't the media manipulate it to get as many views as possible?

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Moritz, I think that the media sources are connectd to the governemnt, they will probaly only show what the government and DHS want to hear. So they will be manipulating the information for the sake of DHS and making it look good. It might be trying to cover up flaws and make us look like the perfect government.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Moritz
yes, but Barbara is a different kind of reporter. Her job is to dive into the deep issues, and this could be a huge story against the DHS.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I feel like Marcus, should of known that the press would twist his words. For starters they are ''over 25'' so why would he trust them to get the true story out in the first place? And who wants to hear that the DHS is not helping america. Someone said "to united a country give them a common enemy" and that is exactly what the press had done.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The good of the people? No offence but since when has the media really cared about the good of the people? Most of the time and in almost every article in the newspaper or online a reporter is ripping on someone or a theory that someone came up with. They inform people about things, but not exactly for the good of the people.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @Lindsey
She has gone to jail like three times for hoarding information from the popo (police).

    ReplyDelete
  70. Barbara and Marcus have a lot in common, they both use lots of technology, and they see when something is wrong and try to do something about it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree with Brandon and Nate, this whole time the DHS has been the bad guy. Their job is to protect a major American city that has been struck by a terrorist attack. This is also after 9/11 so the measure that they are taking would have to be extreme. (sorry its kinda late)

    ReplyDelete
  72. @Linsey
She said she has gone to jail twice rather than give up her sources. This gave Marcus a huge sense of respect for Barbara.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @moritz
News people change the story as much as they can. Mr. MAer talked about how the government wants the people to hear what they want to hear, even if that means that people will have false information. The news does the exact same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  74. If you control the media, you control whatever is within the media's limits.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @Emily- but they aren't informing people of the truth! it's all hidden. i agree with your view of how the press doesn't care about the good of the people, they care about getting views. but they aren't informing people of the real informtaion.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @Matt F.
Do we actually know that Barbra went to jail?

    ReplyDelete
  77. @matt
So did she go to jail for a good reason?

    ReplyDelete
  78. @liz
Think about what would happen if he wrote this about 9/11 from a terrorists perspective...would you see the government as the bad guy?

    ReplyDelete
  79. @Matt F- so who is in control of the media? the DHS?

    ReplyDelete
  80. @Emily
Yes, we know that. She told us.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Zoe
I agree. I was merely stating that the media doesn't care about the people as long as people keep reading what they are saying.

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Matt- I could tell you that I went to the moon and saw a giant rainbow velociraptor but that doesn't make it true. Barbara could be lying to Marcus to earn his trust. If Marcus tells her everything and she told the DHS then it would be pretty easy for the DHS to track Marcus down.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Zoe, I think that the DHS ultimatly has control over the media. The way i see it if the DHS doesn't want certain information to get out, it's not going to.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Matt F.
So? If we believe that she is being truthful then great, but we don't know that she's not lying.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Emily
I agree with you. I don't think that the media's main goal is to get the most sales

    ReplyDelete
  86. @ Matt
Yeah Matt we can't always assume the best of people.

    ReplyDelete
  87. On the subject of the teacher replacement: I feel that Ms. Galvez knew what was coming as soon as she let the students freely talk. Was that her contribution to Marcus, sense she knew she'd be replaced afterwards? Was that her way of saying "don't give up!"?

    ReplyDelete
  88. @Nate, linsey, brandon
Barbara is a trusted friend by Marcus's parents. I can't imagine that she would lie to Marcus.

    ReplyDelete
  89. @matt
But what if she is like O'Brien in 1984?What if it's an inside job?

    ReplyDelete
  90. @ Matt
She could be lying to marcus's parents...

    ReplyDelete
  91. @Matt- Or Mr. Charington in 1984. Winston trusted him and that didn't turn out so well...

    ReplyDelete
  92. When we went into Iraq it is like one of us beating up a 6 year old in comparison to the US and Iraq

    ReplyDelete
  93. @Tanner and Linsey
An inside job that has existed before this whole idea of Xnet, M1k3y, and Marcus's birth happened. How would she know that she had to make friends with someone who would birth to a computer genius who has radical ideas on a terrorist act that she didn't know would happen. Explain that one please.

    ReplyDelete
  94. @TAnner, I wouldn't be suprised if it was an inside job. I'm sure theres a lot of people who the DHS has recruited to work in secret. Because theres no way to really no everything about everyone unles you have people on the inside trying to pus for more information.

    ReplyDelete
  95. @Matt
Just because she has known them along time doesn't mean her intentions can't change...

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think Courtney makes a good point. Thats one thing thats very different from Winston. Marcus is very cocky, he is convinced he is invisble; while Winston was more of a guy who wanted to stay low key.

    ReplyDelete
  97. @Matt- Ya but Marcus said he go along with his dad until the terrorist attack. My point is, that big of an event effects a lot of people. Barbara could have changed.

    ReplyDelete
  98. So ultimitly everyone feels that Barbara is an inside job?

    ReplyDelete
  99. @liz
Yeah, like Winston who was agianst the system until he was pushed to the edge in 101.

    ReplyDelete
  100. @Liz
There wasn't a doubt in Mr. Yallow's mind when he decided to see Barbara. People know who to trust. It's like a sixth sense in humans.

    ReplyDelete
  101. @Matt F
Barbra wouldn't have to know. She didn't tell Marcus that she'd been in jail in front of is parents so they can't verify and Marcus can't ask his parents without telling them that he is M1k3y which he won't do so there is no way to check the information.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I agree with Matt because Barbara could be with the DHS but most likely she is not. She did not really have any way to know that Marcus was going to start this revolution with xnetters and try to take down the DHS. Hopefully Barbara is safe though because otherwise Marcus is in huge trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  103. The DHS reminds me a lot of the thouht police because they recruit double agents and you have no idea who is who.

    ReplyDelete
  104. One day, I'll prove you all wrong. BARBARA IS A GOOD LADY!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. @Matt
She didnt have to know before. she could have been involved after the bombing. The girl who emails marcus was taken right after the bombing and then brought back as a spy.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Th government in Little Brother is not like the Government in 1984, 1984 is in way more control.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Solid point linsey. people can change even by the slightest of means.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I personally think that Barbara is good, but I also believe that it is possible that she could be working for the DHS.

    ReplyDelete
  109. @Ducey- I agree. But if the DHS continues this way they could become just as in control as 1984's government.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Who is more trustworthy, Zeb or Barbara?

    ReplyDelete
  111. @NAthan, I think the book is trying to show the direction there headed. If they keep getting more and more controlled they might end uplike the government in 1984.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Also for all the people who doubt Barbara.
How would the DHS make her a double agent if the Yallow's went to her the DHS couldn't have predicted that Marcus was M1k3y and that they would tell her of all reporters his story. There is no way she is bad.

    ReplyDelete
