  1. For my two portfolio activites I choose : Draw and Create an Inspiration Board. For draw I had fun trying to draw a self portrait of myself with only 5 lines. It turned out well. Next I choose to Create an Inspiration Board. I have only just begun this so I have not seen any connections yet! My board consists of things that I hope to accomplish and to see in the future. Along with past things that affected my life.

  3. For my symphony portfolio, I participated in "Listen To The Great Symphonies" and I made a 5 line drawing of myself.

I listened to Beethoven's 9th and a lot of things came to mind that related to the book. I listened to each instrumental part and noticed that they sounded good, but they weren't anything special. But when I listened to the entire symphony, it made something magnificent. This is the power of symphony!

The other thing I did was make a 5 line drawing. All the things I drew were not recognizable when looked at solo, but when put together, they resembled a face. I'm no Picasso, but symphony made it possible for things to be seen.

  4. For my 2 portfolio activies I chose draw and look at the negative spaces. For draw I drew a five line protrait of myself. It didn't really look too good but with all the elements of the face (eyes, nose, mouth, and head) put together you could see the big picture and somewhat tell it was someone's face. In looking at the negative spaces at the first bank sign, in between the 1 and the T there is an S, formed by the 1 and T.

  5. For my portfolio activities I did Draw and Listen to the Great Symphonies. I drew a 5 line self portrait and I realized that if you are going to create a picture with only five lines, you need to concentrate on what the whole thing will look like rahter than all the little details. For Listen to the Great Symphonies I listened to Mozart's Symphony No. 35, all the music and different insruments put together make it sound much better than if it were only one type of instrument. Through these activities I learned that sometimes you have to look at the big picture to create something good rather than looking at all the tiny details.

  6. The two activities I chose for my portfolio was "Listen to the Great Symphonies" and "Draw". The symphony I chose to listen to was Mahler's 4th Symphony in G Major. Pink states that he thinks this symphony is inspiring, and I could agree more. Whether, it's with this symphony or any other I am always moved by the music. So, the symphony I chose really did inspire my imagination. For the activity "Draw", I tried drawing my self only using five lines. It was a cool, new way of drawing which inspired a new way of looking at the way to draw. Besides it was fun looking at the different pictures I created.

  7. I chose draw and follow the links for my activities. Drawing myself in 5 lines created a vague yet encompassing view of myself. While specific details couldn't really be seen in the simple drawing, it as a big picture was fairly accurate. While following the links I often noticed that two subjects would be connected by a broad topic. This shows how viewing the big picture, a right brain activity, can help make factual connections, a left brain activity.

  8. I chose for my symphony portfolio, to do, "Listen to the Great Symphonies." I also chose to do "Hit the Newsstand," Except I didn't go to a newsstand because I didn't know where one was so I used my sisters magazines. For the "Listen to the Great symphonies" activity, I listened to Beethoven's 9th symphony. The first thing that I noticed keeping the book in mind was how some instruments came in and out, very quietly or for very short periods of time. Although some of the instruments are constantly playing for the whole time, what defines the symphony is the little parts of it that come in and out, giving certain beats dignity. This is what makes it sound good.
The next one I did was "Hit the Newsstand." The magazines I chose to do that i would have normally not even bothered to glance at were, "Glamour," "Seventeen," "cosmopolitan" and the "The Week." "The Week" was definately geared towards adults who need a quick update on what's been going on with the U.S. It allowed me to widen my thinking by looking at some news stories that I probably would have never even looked at. As for the other three magazines, they really didn't broaden my thinking. They mostly contained clothes, makeup, and how to get that guy you want. The hair and makeup tips didn't do much for me either. I guess the three magazines mostly gave me a glimpse into the society that we have moved into and the social pressures for girls.

  9. For my two Portfolio activities i chose to do a five line drawing of myself and look at negative space.

For the five line drawing of myself, which I did in class up on the chalk board, didn't represent who *I* was all too well, but I tried. This was about the big picture, and I guess that because you could tell that this five line drawing was of a human face, it therefore emcompassed the idea of the activity. but, it also was different from every other five line drawing on the board because I drew myself with my natural curly hair, which nobody else had or put up. So I guess that Symphony, though it is seeing the big picture, is also realizing that there are little differences that make us each different.

For looking at negative space, I thought about Yearbooks. Which may seem like a strange concept, but really, negative space is very important. White space (which is the same as negative space) HAS to be thought about when designing the layouts for the DPS'. In fact, it was the first thing I learned about designing layouts. There has to be enough white space so the page does not look cluttered, but not so much that it looks empty. Also, white space cannot be trapped, because that also looks bad. With Symphony, it is important to look at the complete picture, and negative space is a very important part of that complete picture even though most tend to be oblivious to it.

  10. For the Symphony portfolio activities I chose to draw a five line self portrait and I listened to Beethoen's 9th symphony. When drawing, I learned that it doesn't take much to make a picture. Just by looking at the relationships between the lines a comprehensible drawing is formed. When listening to Beethoven's 9th, I learned that differences combine to make a masterpiece. The difference between the instruments is what makes the symphony so great.

  11. For my two portfolio activities I chose Draw and Look for negative spaces. For draw i looked at my most recent project in Drawing II. We were taking to pictures that correlated with each other some how. I was doing a picture of a dolphin and a killer whale. When it was nearing the end it really pieced together and brought the sense of symphony into it, by seeing one big picture from two. For look for negative spaces I looked at the logo for LG and Volkswagon. The LG logo at a first glance looks just like a little fun design but looking further into it you can see the actual letters. For the Volkswagon logo, just glancing at it, it just looks like a deformed W but looking closer you can see that by a tiny line, there is a V seperated from the W.

  12. The first activity I did was the Draw activity. Basically you had to draw yourself in 5 lines. I ended up with a Disney looking drawing, this was a great exorcise for my right side of my brain.

The second activity I did was look for negative spaces. All I had to do was type in Logos with negative space on Google and I had tons of examples, most of which I’ve already seen. One that I’ve sadly never seen was the girl scouts logo, which was a great example.

  13. For my portfolio, I choose to do drawing a portrait with only 5 lines and do some real brainstorming. The website for the Real brainstorming was really cool. There were lots of cool new ideas on it. I liked doing the 5 line drawing because I found a creative way to do it.

  14. I chose to do the "Draw" and "Look for Negative Space" portfolio activites. When I drew, I found many simple relationships within the drawing and connected them together into one big whole. I even saw relationships when I drew a drawing using only five lines. For example, the amount of space between the eyes is the same amount of space the eye covers, and then connecting that to the space between the nose and the eyes. It really broadened my anaylitical understanding of sympathy.

I then looked for negative space in my daily routines. When I would flip through a magazine, I really tried to concentrate on not just looking at specific things in a picture, like the number on a player's jersey, but to see the picture as one whole thing. I then used that overview of the pictue to try and find missing components to the picture that couldn't be seen before, like how the color bordering the letter on the jersey was different from the color of the actual jersey itself. This really helped me realize how different things can look if you change your perspective on things.

  15. For my symphony portfolio activities I chose to do the draw and listen to the great symphonies activities. Drawing was pretty interesting as I am definitely not an artist but it was fun drawing myself with 5 lines. It was a challenge to draw a picture with so little lines but you just had to make do. It over-simplified and made people see the big picture that the drawing is you even though it isn't detailed or even accurate.

For the great symphonies activity I listened to Mahler's 4th Symphony in G Major. I think it is awesome how normally if one of the musicians to play it might sound bizarre but when all of them play together it sounds beautiful.

  16. For my two portfolio activities, I choose to do Draw and Look for Negative Spaces. When I was trying to draw my 5 line picture on the chalkboard it was really hard. I like to draw faces with a lot more detail and when I cannot include a chin or good eyes, it is really annoying. Since it could only be 5 lines I tried my best to get the most important parts in to make my face. In the activity of looking for negative space I noticed the use of the negative space. Now when I look at the picture my eyes are drawn right too it, just like Mr. Pink said they would be. Looking for negative space is a good thing to train my eyes to do because otherwise I might miss out on little things in pictures that make it complete.

  17. I chose to draw a five line portrait and listen to the great symphonies. The five line portrait was a lot of fun and it was fun to see my self in a mirror and then to look at the picture. I had a little trouble seeing the big picture, but my drawing kind of reseambled my true face. When listenting to Beetoven's 9th, just like Mr. Pink said, new things surfaced when I listned to it and as I listened to each section, I could hear the peices that made up the whole picture.

  18. I tried a five line drawing and look for negative spaces. The drawing was fun but challenging, I'd never really paid attention to how many lines I use to draw. When I was looking for negative space I found it hard to focus on the things that you never pay much attention to.I was watching TV and saw an American Institute of Architecture ad. The symbol was of a key, but the teeth were cut into shapes of buildings into the white space.

  19. For my portfolio, I chose "Listen To The Great Symphonies" and "Five Line Drawing". I listened to Beethoven's 5th and I could hear all the pieces working to gether to make a mesterpiece. Beethoven, himself, was a master of symphony. He could take more than dozens of musical instruments and could make a beautiful piece. Five Line Drawing was very difficult. I never knew that it was so hard to draw with only a few lines. This portfolio challenged the mind, but in the end, proved the lesson of all the little pieces being able to make one.

  20. For my portfolio activities I did the five line picture and to listen to one of the great symphonies. the five line drawing showed me how difficult it was to draw with only five lines. It. also showed me you could make sipped drawings pretty easily but to make them good is hard. when I listened to Beethoven's 9th symphony it showed me how many parts are played in order to create this music. Also for such a masterpiece you must be patient because it must have taken a lot of time for Beethoven to master that.

  21. For my Symphony portfolio I chose to do the 5 line self portrait activity and the listen to a great symphony activity. I thought that 5 line self portrait was a very interesting activity. It really took away from all the little details that are commonly percieved in art, but, in turn made one think about what was truly important. One thing that I believe every self portrait will have, regardless of who it is, is a face outline and hair scribbles. For some reason these seem to be very important aspects to a self portrait. The second activity, listen to a symphony, was also thought provoking. I listenned to Ode to Joy and realized how it took all the instruments to make the song. Regardless of how well each instrument could be played it was the combination of all of them that gave Beethoven's Ode to Joy the full and enriching sound.

  22. For my portfolio activities, I did drawing and listening to great symphonies. In drawing, I tried to draw myself using only five lines. I found it very challenging, and it was very frustrating to me that I couldn't fit in more detail. As for the symphonies, I listened to Mozart's Symphony No. 35 "Haffner Symphony". It was great how Mozart used a variety of instruments to create the song. Also, it was interesting how he changed the tempo and created suspense using the instruments.

  23. For my ssymphony activity I decided to do the five line drawing and the real brainstorming. The five line drawing was fun. It took me a little practice to have a decent looking outocme. But it was a fun activity. The real brainstorming website was really neat. I also learned some cool new ideas.

  24. For my symphony activities I chose to listen to the great symphonies and draw. At first in the listen to great symphonies activity I was only going to listen to one of the suggested symphonies, but i ended up listening to all of them. I was intrigued by how the creator could get all the different instruments to sound so amazing together. This activity shows a great understanding of symphony through music. In the other activity, I drew a picture of myself with only five lines. I liked this activity because it showed you can be creative and artistic without much time or extravagance. It was fun to see what I could create in very limited guidelines. Also, it was interesting how 5 scribbles could turn into something, which is symphony.

  25. For one of my portfolio activities I chose to do a five lined portrait. One of the factors in the portrait is what Daniel Pink mentioned, which is all your ratios have to be correct other wise it throws the whole picture off. After a couple attempts I accomplished this however drawing with my right side of my brain could use work.

The next Portfolio activity I took action in is listening to a symphonies. after listening to a few it reminded me of the beginning of a song in my own library that demonstrates the idea in this chapter as well how everything comes together.

    Here is the song,

  26. I chose draw, and listen to a symphony for my two portfolio acts. For draw, I ended up with a very simple picture that looked nothing like me (of course). I cannot draw to begin with, and only giving me five lines didn't help my cause. I had the basic stick figure look going on, and there was no detail that would set me apart from any other person only useing 5 lines. Unless they were incredibley skilled, of course. For my second activity, I listened to multiple symphonies. I am a band kid, and already had a few on my ipod. One of which i listened to was Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, "Eroica" - Scherzo: Allegro Vivace by Beethoven. I also listened to the Suite for Military Band No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 28, No. 1: 1, Chaconne, 2 Intermezzo, and 3 March. I was able to make connections. for instance I played Military Suite in band last year.

  27. I chose to draw and Hit the Newsstand. I read Sports Illustrated and Cooking Light. I drew a picture upside down and it was much easier to focus on just the lines and forget about the legistics of the picture I knew i was drawing. It was easier. When I read sports illustrated I learned about the new Broncos player and how even something that seems predictictable, like the draft, can be extremely UNpredictablt.

  28. For my symphony activities I choose to listen to a symphony and follow the links. For listen to a symphony I listened to Beethoven's 9th Symphony. It was interesting to hear all the different layers that were talked about in the book. For Follow the links I clicked links in Wikipedia. I went from Wikipedia to Atom. I was able to realize all the connections between two strongly differing subjects.

  29. For my portfolio I did the 'draw.' I found it very interesting and I also thought it was hard to try to draw detail into the self portrait. I also liked the 'Celebrate your amateurness.' I think this is a very good idea. You need to realize the things you aren't the best at and see the beauty of the mistakes you make.

  30. The activities I completed for my portfolio were "Listen to the great symphonies" and the five line portrait. It was an enlightening experience to listen to some great symphonies and try to hear how all of the seperate instruments came together to make one sound. This truly is the essence of symphony (hence the name). The five line drawing was also very interesting. To do this succesfully, you could not focus on the details of your face, only the big picture. In this case the way your face fits together is more important than what the individual parts look like. These were the two activities that I thought truly embodied the idea of symphony.
