Help, help! Our plane has crashed!!!

What is your initial reaction to Lord of the Flies? What do you expect will happen to the characters you've been introduced to? Ralph, Piggy, Simon, Jack? As you read, consider what each character could represent.

  1. My initial reaction to the book was that I felt very bad for all the characters. I would be very upset if i didn't have any of my family or friends around and was a deserted island, when nobody knew I was there. I would probably breakdown and not think logically. I think this will probably happen to the boys as the story progresses. I think eventually, they will lose there minds

  2. My initial reaction to the book was confusion. There is little explination of what is going on, so a new reader can't easily figure out what is going on. Also, I thought that the relationship between Ralph and Piggy brought a foreboding aspect to the book, since these stranded boys already are not getting along.

  3. My initial reaction to Lord of the Flies is postive it looks intriguing. I wonder if the frail
agreement of Ralph being the leader will stand or if a new leader will emerge.

  4. My initial reaction to "Lord of the Flies" is that it is going to be a very interesting book with a lot of things going on at the same time. I think the other boys might end up not liking Ralph being the leader as much as they wanted him to be at the beginning of the story because he kind of just decided he would be leader. I feel like PIggy might end up doing something to Ralph because Ralph told people to call him PIggy even though PIggy told him not to. Jack seems like he is going to end up being very violent because he already attacked a pig with a knife, but didn't succeed. Simon seems like the weakling of the bunch because he already fainted. I think this book is going to get very interesting but as of right now I am still very confused.

  5. My initial reaction to the 'Lord of the Flies' was confusion. I did not get what was going on at first, though as I read further into the book, I caught on to what was happening. I expect that there may be some fights among the boys. Ralph seems like he is a good leader so far, though I believe that some of the boys will not agree with his decisions. Piggy is a really nice, but has a lack of confidence. Well, he had some confidence at the very beginning of the book, but when Ralph told the other boys' his name is Piggy, I think he lost it. I expect that the other boys will continue to be mean to Piggy. Simon seems very quiet and shy. He does not talk very often and just agrees with what the others are saying. Jack exhibits some violent behavior in the first chapter. I presume that his behavior will become more and more violent as the book goes on.

  6. Lord of the Flies after chapter 1 has me hooked, and I don't say that about many books. I'm excited to see the relationships between the boys develope and to see how they build up their society on the island.

  7. My initial reaction to "Lord of The Flies" was interest and confusion. The fact that most of the events occuring baffle me, gives me the desire to read more. I think these boys have developed interesting relationships already. Although Ralph seems in charge now, I think putting Piggy on the back burner was a bad decision on his part. I think all seems well now but chaos is soon to erupt. I also think that Jack not being able to kill the pig shows just how young and immature they are. It will be hard to survive when they can't even provide their own food.

  8. My initial reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was intersted. I thought the beginning of the book was a good one. It intrigued me to keep reading and so i enjoy the book. I can already have a genera lidea of what the role of the boys will be in the future. it seem like Ralph willl be the "leader" and they rest will be his helpers. Piggy seems like the excited but odd boy in the plaot. Simon seems shy and cautious about the others. Jsck i seems like he'll be the protector of the gan, when he shows his rage and violence in the first chapter. All in all, I'm excited to read "Lord of the Flies."

  9. My initial reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was partially confusion and I also felt a little bad for all those boys. The first few pages didn't really explain anything about the book but it got a little better as the chapter went on. That little boy named Johnny was only about six years old; it would be so hard to have to start from scratch and survive in the wilderness. One other thing, why would anyone want to be the "lord of flies"? Flies are ... well, weird and hairy. Oh well, I hope the book will explain that term.

  10. My initial reaction to Lord of the Flies is confusion. The book really confused me in the first chapter, but after a little while, it started to make more sense to me. I also feel really bad for the boys. I wouldn’t be able to live without my friends and family. I expect that the characters will get into a fight, maybe about the leader. Also, when you’re around people other than your family for a long time, people can snap really easily. I think that this might happen later in the book.

  11. My initial reaction to ‘Lord of the Flies’ is interest and confusion.

I am confused about what is going on exactly, and what happened.

I have a feeling they are from England (England uses Pounds as their money system right??) Anyway, I am very confused as to what caused them to crash and why everybody (accept the pilot apparently) seems to be completely unscathed by the crash (no injuries or deaths—again excluding the pilot—what-so-ever so far…) I am confused as to why a bunch of kids in school uniforms were flying in a plane over the ocean in the first place, and I am wondering what exactly is going on with the Atom Bomb mentioned in the text.

I don’t think the boys realize how bad the situation they are in is yet, and when they do I bet there will be something quite interesting happening. I think that when hunger or fear eventually strikes, the group will become very uncivil and crazy and their system will deteriorate.

I think that Ralph will find himself in over his head, Piggy will have harbored resentments toward others that might show later on, Simon will probably grow tougher—he just seems like that person, and Jack will become power-thirsty and maybe even violent.

  12. My initial reaction to the book "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding is confusion. At the beginning of the book I wasn't really sure what was going on; however, within the first ten pages I began to get a feel of what was occurring and who the main characters were. I also felt bad for the boys, because as confusing as it was for me at first it must have been ten times more as confusing for them. I mean, imagine being six like Johnny, in a burning plane that just crashed onto a deserted island and being stranded without your family or anyone who can assure him that he will get back home. As I read I realized how each character had a majorly different personality. I found Piggy as the wise, smart, and cautious one out of the band of boys, Ralph as a person who really isn't sure who he is and just goes with the flow, Jack Merridew as a very self assured and violent kid, and Simon as the one with a weak heart. I can understand how at first some of these kids would be excited, but over time I think they will realize that they are on their own and will have to rely on each other to survive. I also agree with Emily when she wonders why the book is called “Lord of the Flies.”

  13. My first reaction to “Lord of the Flies” was confusion. I didn’t understand why the boys were on the island or who the choir was. I know an airplane crash, but I wasn’t sure why there were no adults. I didn’t know if all the people were from a school or where they were going. I was also intrigued by what had happened all ready and what will happen in the future. It was interesting to see how the voting worked out and how they elected Ralph to be the chief.

  14. My first reaction to The Lord of the Flies was confusion because I wasn't sure why a bunch of school kids were on a plane. I also wasnt sure how the plane crashed and why there was a war going on. As the story progresses I expect that Ralph and Jake will break away from each other and form two different groups on the island. I believe the boys will eventually go crazy from being stranded on the island for so long and a war between the two groups will erupt because of it.

  15. My first reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was, " Sweet another survival themed book, or even Post Apocalyptic Themed." But I also was just lost on the fact of what time period is it, what’s up with the fact that they could be some of the only surviving humans cause they mentioned something about an Atom Bomb, and also what about water cause that wasn't mentioned. Also what’s the deal with Granite?
I think Ralph will become power thirsty and try to rule everyone, that’s where I think the title “Lord” comes from and the “Flies” are the children. I also noted that there might be a conflict between jack because he is a leader too, but he lost the election which might make him turn away from Ralph. I feel that piggy will be the one everyone uses as a "Tool" and will just be picked on 24-7.

  16. My initial reaction to the book 'Lord of the Flies' was confusion and excitement. I was confused on some parts about what was happening and who the characters were because it does not give a lot of explanation. I was also very excited to continue reading the book because I think it will prove to be a very thought provoking and fascinating book. I think that as the characters start to realize the seriousness of the situation, they will start to get worried. Also the society that they have formed will start to fall apart as people become anxious and increasingly frightened. The age of the boys could become a huge issue, because younger kids do not have enough knowledge and past experience to be able to survive on their own.
I think that not letting Piggy come along to explore the island was a very bad decision made by Ralph, and Piggy may later want to get even with all the boys. It is possilble that Jack, although is content right now, will later resent that fact that he was not voted in as the chief. So far, this has been an interesting read and I look forward to reading how the story will unfold.

  17. My first reaction to "The Lord of the Flies" was interest. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next in the story. I think the author purposely gives you very little information to keep the reader on the edge of his or her seat. Regarding Ralph, Jack, and Simon; I think that they will get lost on their way back to the platform and will need Piggy's help to get back. However, I think that Piggy will have second thoughts about helping because of the way he is treated. The three other leaders do not repespect him and tease him about his name. Also, even if Piggy does help, the others will not be grateful. It seems like they will take Piggy for granted. So, I am excited to see what will happen next in "The Lord of the Flies".

  18. My reaction to the first chapter of "Lord of the Flies" is that I think it will be better the second time. Ralph seems like a natural leader but will also is willing to betray in order to look "cool" or "powerful." Piggy appeared to be the kind of character that will let anything happen to him because he does not know how to stand up for himself. Jack seems power thirsty the way he immediately decides the choir will be hunters. He seams very disrespectful and mean. Simon appears to be quiet and seems to already be a main character the way he was immediately singled out to go on the mission.

  19. My first response to LOF was happiness because I could tell that the book would keep me entertained. It starts off right away after the crash which I like because most books start boring and talking about the characters and everything before it all happened. But I think that Ralph and Jack are both extremely cocky. Ralph is only nice to Piggy when they are alone and is too cool in public. Jack just seems like a total tool and i kind of hate him. Simon just follows along and is boring and a baby.

  20. When I first started to read Lord of The Flies, I had to sort my thoughts out. Once I figured out the characters' personalities, it made more sense. I expect that for a while, Piggy will follow along with the mass majority, but eventually, he will voice his opinion. Ralph and Jack will most likely have a massive feud because they both like to be in charge and although Ralph is in charge, I predict that Jack will end up giving more to the group. Simon will see that he will have to build endurance unless he wants Jack and Ralph to ditch him as he did to Piggy. He might rise to be Jack's right hand man. Each character represents a characteristic that each of us has. There's Piggy, symbolic of the side of us that wants to be taken care of and rule-following. Ralph is the rebellious side of us all that thinks we are right, even when we aren't. When we just want to go with the flow and stop trying so hard, there is Simon's representation. Jack shows how everyone likes authority, putting their intelligence to good use.

  21. My first reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was a desire to read more. At first the author doesn't reveal a ton about the characters and the story. It makes me wonder how the story and characters will evolve. The beginning of the story left readers to infer some aspects of the plot, which really enticed me. To me, Ralph seems a bit cocky and arrogant. He puts Piggy down in front of others in order to establish leadership in front of the group. Jack and Ralph seem to be the clear leaders of the group. Simon follows Ralph and Jack mostly, doing what they tell him to do. Piggy is appears to be kind of a chubby nerd, but he tries to overcome his appearance and attempts to fit in. I think he will evolve and become a better person as the book progresses.

  22. My initial reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was that it seems like an interesting book. I like how in the beginning they don't give you that much information and you have to figure things out for yourself. I think Ralph seems like an interesting and funny character and I'm looking forward to finding out more about him. Jack is kind of mysterious so I would like to find out more a bout him. I feel sorry for Piggy and i hope that the other characters become nicer to him. Simon seems like he can probably play a pretty big role even though he doesn't seem very important yet. I can't wait to get more into the story and find out what is happening.

  23. My first reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was part confusion, part interest. I couldn’t figure out why this random kid was stranded on an island and didn’t even know if his classmates were stranded with him. This led to interest because I wanted to learn about Ralph's "story" and how he ended up on the island. I also didn’t understand how the choir could all find each other if everyone else was scattered around. Ralph seems to have good leadership skills and I think he will stay in charge, but not without protest from Jack. Jack has a violent streak in him and really likes to mention hunting, in addition to stabbing trees with his dagger. This violence could translate into Jack wanting the position of authority. Piggy wants to be apart of the action, but because of his size and asthma, Ralph and Jack don’t want him to come along. Simon, I think, is one of those guys who isn’t a major character in the beginning and just helps others, but later "saves the day."

  24. My inital reaction to this book was confusion. It didn't do a very good job of explaining. It left you guessing about the details. I think order will not be kept for long. There was no connection between the characters. The character are already not getting along. I think piggy will grow as a character as the book goes on. He may learn to assert himself to others. Jack has not made a good first impression. He doesn't seem like the type to step down and let someone else take the lead. I have a feeling he will be the instigator in a sense of rebellion from the group. Ralph's power over these kids is not great. He has no authority and no one has a reason to trust him, this will make him an unfit leader.

  25. The first chapter of "Lord of the Flies" got me thinking about several characters. To start off there's piggy will be very loyal even though Ralph made fun of him, this is shown when after he chooses people for the expedition, "we don't want you," jack said flatly three's enough." Piggy's glasses flashed "I was with him when he found the conch. i was with him before anyone else was."
Also i think Piggy's blunt because when Ralph said his father was coming to rescue him Piggy said no one knows were here which is logical. Also there is Ralph, Ralph shows hes a natural leader at the meeting. Ralph also shows he has hope by his determined attitude about his daddy coming to save him. Next there's Jack, he is a natural leader to but i doubt he was voted in like Jack but uses dominance over his peers. I also wonder if the vow he made about not hesitating to kill will come up again. All i saw in Simon was he was quiet.

  27. My reactions to the first chapter of ‘Lord of the Flies,’ were interest and confusion. The beginning was kind of hard to follow, but I liked it and I think it's going to be a good book. I'm not so sure about Jack though. I think he will try to become the chief and probably cause some trouble and or some violence. It makes me really sad that no one likes Piggy, he seems really nice and I hope he learns to stand up for himself. I'm excited to be reading this book and I hope that they will all be rescued.

  28. My first response to LOF was confusion. It did not explain much and some of the grammar used is hard to get used to.But i was somewhat interested. I was interested to see if Ralph relizes that he has hurt Piggy and if he will fix what has been done. Ralph i think believes that he is better than Piggy and doesn't want to be assosiated with him, because he wants to fit in with everyone else. Some of the kids on the island are quite immature. Alot of the characters just seem to kind of play follow the leader with Jack. Hopefully they will somehow get a source of food and some of them will grow up.

  29. My reaction was that Jack and Ralph were the two natural leaders. Piggy was trying to be a leader but no one really took him seriously. I think that eventually Ralph and Jack will have a power struggle and people will break into 2 different groups with Jack or Ralph as the leader. Simon didn't really show any natural leadership. I think the only reason they picked him to go with the 2 leaders was because he was quiet, goes with a flow, and does what he is told to do.

  30. My initial reaction to “Lord of the Flies” was both confusion and interest. I didn’t really understand what was going on because the author doesn’t go in depth about the situations that are occurring. They are also out of this world and seem impossible. The interest balanced out the confusion. Since the author didn’t really describe the situation, it makes me want to read more. This seems like the kind of book that’ll keep me reading the whole way through. Ralph is depicted as a hardhead boy who doesn’t really care for anyone. I think this will come back and get him. I also think the same, thing will happen with Jack. Jack is arrogant and I think his choir will eventually turn on him, like everyone else. Piggy has a bright future. Everyone is going to love Piggy. I also think he will become the leader of the group eventually. Simon is the quiet type. He is going to add something of importance to the story. I think Simon will become a vital part of this book. I think the book will become more interesting with twists, turns, and challenges everywhere.

  31. My initial response to "The Lord of the Flies" was confusion as well as interest. I did not understand what had happened to the children to make them stranded on a desert island, but found this idea to be pretty interesting. I think having children run their own society and live of one another is a great concept. Though the book did not give much information about the situation the children are in, I’m sure it will become more clear in future chapters. I think that all of the characters will create a very close bond later on in the book, as they will be depending on each other to survive. I find Jack to be an interesting character, and can't wait to find out what happens to him later on in the book. To me, Jack seems more menacing than any character. While I think that Piggy, Ralph, and Simon are on their way to a close friendship. I am looking forward to reading on in the book and seeing how the characters develop their civilization, find food and water sources, and grow.

  32. My first reaction to "The Lord of the Flies" was confusion and intrigue. I really was confused at the beginning because of the way the book introduced everyone. I got the hang of it after the next few pages. I think the way that the kids treat Piggy is going to backfire. Simon seems to be the shy type, when Jack and Ralph seem to be true leaders. I think that throughout the book there is going to be big competion between Jack and Ralph. So all in all, i am pretty excited to see what happens next in "The Lord of the Flies".

  33. My first reaction that came to me when I was reading the first sentence was this is going to be a very interesting book. I was very confused when I started but once you get farther into the book it makes a lot more sense. I think that Ralph was very mean to Piggy when he first met him and then especially when he tells everyone that his nickname is Piggy. Piggy is probably very angry with Ralph after the way he treated him and he doesn't seem like he will be forgiving him anytime soon. Jack seemed afraid of killing that pig so his choir group should not be the hunters. Something might have happened when he was young or he cannot handle the thought of killing a living animal. Simon seems like a very mellow kid but if he is going to faint like that he should definitely stay where the group is so he doesn't fall of a cliff when he faints. Overall I think this will be a very different book from what I have read before.

  34. My initial reaction to "Lord of the Flies" was confusion. I really couldn't group together exactly what was happening in the first couple of pages, but then i began to understand once I could grasp and annotate the text. My confusion then turned to interest. The somewhat lack of information made the book and characters interesting. I believe something will happen to each character based upon one of their faults. For Piggy, that would be his asthma and insecurity. For Ralph, his carelessness. For Jack, his want to take the lead, and for Simon, his questioning and lack of leadership. I believe each character represents the typical person in every society. There is the designated leader, Ralph, the leader's right hand man, Jack, the passive one, Simon, Piggy the conscious one, and all the others who will help to build upon the society. It is difficult to make assumptions about the characters considering how the author has given very light an subtle descriptions of the characters. I believe the further on into the book, the more about each character will be revealed and how they attribute to the new self formed society. Everyone will play their part, and unravel the plot of the story.

  35. "Lord Of The Flies" is one of my favorite books that I have ever read for school or just on my own. The first time i read Lord Of The Flies, i was intrigued by the characters reaction to eachother and how they would all work together while stranded on an island without any parental guidance. Throughout the book I predict that the children will have to learn to work together more efficiently during there time on the island.

  36. My ininitial response to "Lord of the Flies" was, "what the heck is going on?". I didn't understand any of the clues that the characters or the settings were giving in the first couple pages of who's who or what was occuring. As the story progressed, I started to comprehend more clearly what was going on. I think that the four boys will split up into different groups, or "cliques", beacause of their alter-egos and negative attitudes. It seems to me as if Ralph and Jack are more the leaders, and Simon and Piggy are less confident and more followers.

  37. My initial reaction to “The Lord of the Flies” was excitement. It was exciting because it is a new book and you have to piece together all the clues because the book does not spell them out for you. I am very interested in this book. I have read it once and didn’t quite understand the point of it but I hope that will change. I think Jack and Ralph will start disagreeing because they are both very headstrong and dominant. I’m not quite sure what to think of Simon just yet because he isn’t mentioned as much as Jack, Ralph and Piggy. He seems like a person who goes with the flow and doesn’t question Ralph is quite a handful. He seems very rude to people and I don’t really like his character traits. Piggy is very unique. It seems like he is all around a good person but Jack and Ralph brush him off a lot. I think they might pay later for that. Also, I think all the characters will develop in their maturity level. Jack and Ralph will have to learn to get along better if they want to help the others, Simon needs to speak up a bit, and Piggy will need to learn to be a little more of a leader and speak up for himself.

  38. This is my second time reading "Lord of the Flies" and my initial reaction to the first chapter this time is clarity. The first time I read the book I had many questions about the book right off the bat. Why were these boys here? Where are they? After already reading the book, most of the questions I had have been answered. Also, as I've already read the book, I know what happens to Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and Simon. However, when I read the book the first time I would not have predicted the outcomes that awaited these characters.

  39. I didn't know anything about this book, not even heard of the title before so I really didnl't know what to expect after just reading the title. My first reaction after reading the first chapter was that I was confused. I became more interested in knowing more details about the story because it would help me understand what's happening more. Throughout the story I would expect the boys to get into many fights. If you're stuck on a deserted island with people different from you, there is going to be drama and disagreements. I think Simon seems to keep to himself more, Piggy is the logical thinker, Jack is the outspoken and violent one and Ralph is the confident one that calms everyone down if they're stressed out and tries to figure out what to do.

  40. My initial reaction to the first chapter in "Lord of the Flies" would be suprised, confused, and interested. I am suprised to find out how much setting they introduced in just the first chapter. I am interested to find out more and read on. I would expect the boys to part ways instead of having a complete leader over them all. Splitting up into groups and fighting one another, is one more thing I would expect from stranded boys. Ralph symbolizes the leadership, Jack represents the protection and food gathering, Piggy represents the thinking and decision making, and Simon sybolizes the rest of the children.

  41. In the first chapter of 'Lord of the Flies' I feel like I learned quite a bit about all the characters. I feel like Piggy will be a follower in this book, because I feel like he wants to be liked. For instance when he says he doesn't want Ralph to call him Piggy, while he does protest, i feel like he doesn't stick up for himself enough. Also he is trying to fit in and add to the group when he is talking about his glasses and asthma it feels like he is exited to have something to talk about. Ralph and Jack are both leaders but i feel as we get further into the book one of them will emerge as the better leader. Some leaders are naturally competitive so I sense there will be competition between the two and in the end Piggy might come out on top because he seems like the type who would not get involved. Simon seems like he is going to come out on the bottom, just because he has already fainted-and he didn't really see to want to step and take charge. It seems like he and Piggy may become friends because I feel like Ralph and Jack are going to get bossy and this will annoy the other two. I also feel that Simon could surprise us with some kind of special characteristic later in the book. The first chapter of 'Lord of the Flies' was very interesting and I feel like I will learn quite a lot from this book.

  42. My intitial reaction to the first chapter was an interest to keep reading no matter what. This story hits the ground running with a great intro to our characters. After learning more of the characters I expext to be a great split between the entire group. How can they work as a group with so much argueing? I also expect that Jack will lead a seperate group and Ralph will lead another. I guess that Piggy will do something drastic to stop the bullying of himself and Simon will play a larger role later in the plot. I am excited to see where this story goes and how the characters resolve their problems.

  43. My initial reaction to "The Lord of The Flies" was curiosity. It left me thinking questions like: Where are they? Why did the plane crash? How big is this island? We know that they are somewhere tropical, and we know that the island, so far, is not very big. All the children came soon after one blow through the shell, meaning they couldn't have been too far away. The first chapter also led me to believe that those boys are going to have to grow up a lot over the course of this novel. The characters who we see now will not be those same naive, innocent kids at the end of the book. Some will change for the better, and some for the worse.

  44. My initial reaction to "Lord of The Flies" was confusion and interest. I was confused because all the boys seem to be very calm and not freaked out by the fact that they crash landed on an island, and have no one but the other boys. I expect that Piggy will end up being the one that everyone looks to for survival; so far he has shown to be the only one who is slightly worried that it will be extremely lucky if they are found. I also think Simon will be mature and smart about their predicament. I think Ralph and Jack could be a detriment to the group. They crack jokes and relax instead of trying to find a solution to their problem.

  45. So far, Lord of the Flies is a very interesting book. I think I will enjoy reading it. So far Ralph is the leader, but I think Jack may emerge as a leader. Piggy will stay friends with Ralph, but I don’t think he will ever be friends with Jack. I think that Simon is a very excitable person. I think that he will faint a few more times within the course of the story.

  46. Well, I'm immediately attatched to the book because it involves the growth of a small group of people into major inhabitants of an island. But I think that Ralph should watch his back for people willing to overthrow him (Look out for Jack).

  47. well I have already read this book so I know what is going to happen. But my initial impression on this first chapter was exciting. A bunch of kids all on one island by themselves. It should be interesting. Ralph is going to be the leader of the pack for a little while but i think Jack is going to get power hungry and start his own group. im concerned for piggy's safety. He is fat and has ashma. With all the physical activities they are going to have to do will be tough or potentially dangerous for him. Looking forward to the rest.

  48. The book lord of the flies seems like it has alot of potential. There are many things you can do when your on and island and so far i like what the author has done, and i think it will be a very hard book to put down.

  49. At first I was completely confused while reading "Lord of the Flies". Gilding jumped straight into the story and that combined with his almost overwhelming descriptivness made the book hard to read for me. Through all of the adjectives and adverbs I managed to accumulate these ideas. I believe Ralph and Piggy will be the protagonists while Jack and his hunters will be the antagonists. Ralph seems like a cool headed voice of reason for the most part as a leader while Jack seems more power hungry. I think Simon will be important because of how Golding singled him out by Simon fainting. I am excited to see how the title ties into the book if at all and to see what will happen to all of the characters as the book goes on.

  50. My initial reaction to the book Lord of the Flies was that I was a little bit confused about where the boy was and what was happening. I was also a little confused when Ralph met Piggy, because it was hard to tell who was talking, and later on why most of the boys on the plane didn’t seem to know each other, except the choir. I also thought it was an interesting start to what seems like an exciting story, with all the boarding school boys stuck on a tropical island. I expect that as the story develops Ralph is the main leader. He showed leadership in the first chapter, and was not quite as mean as Jack, but still a little bossy. I think that later on Jack will want to be the leader in the group. I think he will still be mean, but might improve. And he will still want to be the one in charge. I think that as the story progresses, Piggy will be a very important character. I think that even though people bully him around and laugh at him, he’ll do anything he can to help on the island. They should be nicer to him. Simon will probably be one of the boys on the island that will help Jack, Ralph, and Piggy, but he is more of a follower than a leader. The book and the characters seem very unique and it sounds like a good book.

  51. I got Lord of the Flies a week early so I finished reading it already. After reading the first chapter a second time I noticed more details within the story and I understood more about the plot and the characters.

  52. My initial reaction to LOF was very good. The book seems very interesting. I love the characters and the way they are described. As far as my predictions for the characters go, all the characters are very different. Piggy is clearly being disrespected. Ralph betrays him as far as hiding his embarassing name and Jack is an absolute jerk to him. In my opinion, Ralph is a good guy. He is a strong leader who has his priorities set. Jack on the other hand is mean, selfish, and very full of himself. I see nothing good in his future. Simon, on the otherhand is on the right track. He is socially strong and is a favorite to Ralph. He has all the things he needs to be a respected leader of the clan. Lord of the Flies looks like it is going to be a good book, and I am excited to read further.

  53. My reaction, in the beginning of LOF was that it was very hard to follow and confusing. I did not like it very much. I believe that what will happen to the boys will be different for each one of them. I think some will adapt to the island and end up just surviving instead of trying to get rescued while others will not want to "become one with the island". These select few will keep on trying to get rescued and when they due, i believe the others will not get rescued. Although Lord of the Flies started out boring and confusing it is now exciting and i am excited to finish it.
